CFD Erosion Assessment of Multi-Phase Fluids

CFD Erosion Assessment of Multi-Phase Fluids

Benefits
A full multi-phase Computational Fluid Dynamics erosion assessment identified erosion hotspots within complex piping geometry. The work found that the most significant erosion occurred within a very thick-walled section of a 3-way valve which would be acceptable, thus enabling the required life extension for the subsea hardware.
Background
As part of the Woodside Energy Limited’s CWLH Life Extension process Atteris performed corrosion and erosion assessments for all key components in the system.
For the erosion assessment Atteris utilised a staged process to assess the erosion risk to each subsea component. Preliminary assessments utilised equation-based erosion models defined within DNVGL-RP-O501 to screen for erosion hotspots. This assessment indicated potential erosion issues in a three way valve which required for advanced analysis.
Work Performed by Atteris

A full multi-phase computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was utilised to predict erosion rates within a three way valve structure under a variety of flow conditions and sand production rates.

Atteris utilised ANSYS Fluent to undertake the coupled fluid-particle CFD simulation. The overall assessment case matrix considered multiple flow conditions and the impact of a deforming mesh on the overall erosion rate within the 3-way valve.

Prior to the assessment of the CWLH 3-way valve Atteris verified its CFD erosion modelling methodology by replicating the models and results two published erosion papers for i) single phase fluid flow and ii) multi-phase fluid flow.
